Skiing & Winter Sports

The Sierra Nevada's greatest winter playground

A Winter Wonderland

When winter storms roll in from the Pacific, they deposit some of North America's most legendary snowfall on the Sierra Nevada peaks surrounding Lake Tahoe. The lake sits in a natural bowl that funnels moisture-laden air up over the mountains, generating the heavy, consistent snowpack that ski resorts depend on.

Tahoe averages over 300 inches of snow per year at the higher elevations. The ski season typically runs from Thanksgiving through April, with some resorts staying open into May on good snow years.

With more than 15 ski resorts within a 60-mile radius, Tahoe offers more variety and terrain than almost any other ski region in the world. Whether you're a first-timer taking a lesson or a seasoned expert hunting double-black couloirs, there's a mountain here calling your name.

Where to Ski at Tahoe

Each resort has its own character and strengths. Here are some of the most beloved destinations.

⛷️

Palisades Tahoe

Formerly known as Squaw Valley, Palisades hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics and remains one of the most iconic resorts in North America. With 6,000 acres of terrain, 170+ trails, and a vertical drop of over 2,600 feet, it satisfies experts and intermediates alike.

🏂

Northstar California

The go-to resort for families and intermediate skiers. Northstar boasts a pedestrian village full of shops and restaurants, impeccably groomed runs, and a highly regarded ski school. The resort excels at creating a polished, comfortable experience for all ages.

🌨️

Heavenly Mountain

Spanning California and Nevada, Heavenly offers breathtaking views across both the lake and the Nevada desert from a single run. Its gondola departs from South Lake Tahoe's casino district, creating a uniquely dramatic gateway to the mountain.

🎿

Kirkwood

The locals' secret — deep in a remote valley, Kirkwood receives some of the heaviest snowfall in Tahoe. Its expert terrain is among the most challenging in the region, and its off-the-beaten-path location means shorter lift lines.

🏔️

Diamond Peak

Overlooking the lake from the Nevada side, Diamond Peak is a smaller, friendly resort known for its spectacular views, lack of crowds, and excellent conditions for beginners and intermediates. A local gem often overlooked by visitors.

❄️

Sugar Bowl

One of the oldest ski areas in California, Sugar Bowl opened in 1939 and retains an old-world alpine charm. Its four peaks offer varied terrain, and its position on Donner Summit catches storms early for exceptional early-season snow.
