North America's Largest Alpine Lake
Lake Tahoe dazzles in every season — a sapphire jewel cradled by ancient peaks, offering world-class adventure, breathtaking scenery, and rare, pristine beauty.
About the Lake
Lake Tahoe straddles the border of California and Nevada at an elevation of over 6,200 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Its remarkably clear, deep-blue water — the result of limited nutrients and minimal runoff — has captivated visitors for over a century.
The lake holds enough water to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14 inches. It almost never freezes, maintaining a relatively constant temperature below its surface throughout the year.
Surrounding the lake, the Sierra Nevada mountains rise dramatically, with peaks exceeding 10,000 feet, creating a playground for skiers, hikers, climbers, and nature lovers across every season.
